After more than 16 years in the District, our incredible Administrative Assistant Karen Madsen is retiring. We will miss her smiling face greatly and wish her all the best!
Karen began as an ELL Para, before moving on to be a Literacy Para. She also held the title of Office Assistant before transitioning into her final role as our Administrative Assistant.
"There are so many wonderful memories with the students, our families, volunteers and staff. When I was working with the ELL students one of them told me I smelled like Disneyland! The support of families through various school functions was amazing."
Karen will always remember the staff she's worked with as more than coworkers—we have become family.
"I have been fortunate through all of my years to work with the best staff around. They have always been supportive, encouraging and helpful. Our faithful volunteers have become friends and pen pals when they have moved away," she said. "Through the years we've laughed, cried and problem-solved together. There have been marriages, babies and then those babies have graduated! It is truly a family."
When asked about some of her most exciting memories, she said: "One day we completely lost electricity. That event used every skill I could muster in communication in and out of the building, keeping the building calm with darkness enveloping almost 400 students and contacting Centerpoint to get us back up and running!!"
What will she miss the most? "I will miss the students and staff the most. Elementary students have been a perfect fit for me with their challenges, comical look at life and payment of hugs and drawings! To love coming to work every day and look forward to being with co-workers is one of life's greatest blessings."
Thank you for everything, Karen!
